Paper #2 Assignment:
First Draft Due: April 5th
Read or re-read "IND AFF or Out of Love in Sarajevo" by Fay Weldon (Bedford Introduction to Literature) and utilizing one of the following questions that I have chosen from the "Considerations for Critical Thinking and Writing" at the conclusion of the story, write a 5-6 page essay that responds in a thoughtful and critical way, utilizing examples and quotes from the text to back up your response (argument).
* Please note that I have chosen only 5 out of the 10 questions from that section from which you may choose ONE to respond: #'s 4, 5, 6, 9, or 10. You may NOT choose any of the remaining questions . . . only one of the following from below.
PICK ONE OF THE FOLLOWING SET OF QUESTIONS BELOW and write a 5-6 page essay responding, utilizing the text and textual evidence to back up your argument/s:
4. Describe the narrator's relationship with Peter. How do you think he regards her? Why is she attracted to him?
5. Why is Sarajevo important for the story's setting? What is the effect of having the story of Princip's assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife woven through the plot?
6. Describe Mrs. Piper. Though she doesn't appear in the story, she does have an important role. What do you think her role is?
9. Why does the narrator decide to go home? Why do you think she makes a reasoned or impulsive decision? Explain why you think so.
10. Discuss the relationship between the personal history and the public history recounted in the sotry. How are the two interconnected? Explain whether you think it is necessary to be familiar with the assassinations in Sarajevo before reading the story. (And why, if so.)
* First draft should include a paragraph at the end that outlines your strategy for the continuation of your paper. Due in class for drafting workshop on APRIL 5th.
NOTE: 3 points, or the equivalent of a half a letter grade, will be taken off of your final paper grade if you do not turn in at least three pages of a draft at the beginning of class! BRING 2 COPIES OF YOUR DRAFT!! (One for me and one for draft workshop). NO EXCEPTIONS!!
** ALWAYS, ALWAYS give textual examples to support your claims and make sure you properly cite quotations and paraphrased examples. You need to use a parenthetical citation at the end of every sentence/s in which you either cite a quote or paraphrase the author's words. Since you are using one source for this assignment, which is a compilation of other authors' texts (The Bedford Introduction to Literature), the citation would include the author's last name and page number; example: (Chai 112). For this assignment, I WILL require a Work Cited page. |
